UPDATE 12/1/18:
Preacher is a 7-year-old, 65-pound, neutered male, Fox Hound/Labrador (mix) that came to us in 2015 with a large wound on his neck.  He loves hanging out with his favorite people. He has been described as stubborn dog after being returned to us from three different homes.  Why?  Because at times, he is unwilling to be forced to do certain ordinary things.  Sometimes he can be convinced with food.  Preacher has proven to us that if you try to pressure him, he may unpredictably growl, and if you ignore his growls, he may use his teeth. This said: We love him, anyway. We suspect he has had a difficult time in his past. Yet, he still has this big list of WONDERFUL TRAITS!  He:
- is well mannered and house trained in previous homes. (Hates when it is raining but holds his pee for a long time).
- loves having a doggie door into a fenced yard to come-and-go when he wishes.  (Adopters must provide this kind of arrangement).
- loves the comfort of his overstuffed dog bed (it goes home with him).
- loves to be petted, hang out with adults, and never jumps up on people.
- SITs and WAITs for treats and will GIVE PAW too.  He loves food puzzle toys!
- accepts treats with a very gentle mouth.
- is a low energy couch potato dog, not destructive of soft things, and rarely barks.  He enjoys riding in a car too.
- doesn't climb or dig and loves to hang out in the yard during good weather. He will run in big circles, toss a toy up into the air and catch it for a few minutes, and then he is ready for a nap!  He helps us garden by carrying sticks.
- does not enjoy leash-walks.  He will sit down in the middle of a walk and refuse to go further.  Instead of leash-walking him, you need to have a fenced yard with a doggie door to accommodate his outdoor needs.
- enjoys being loved on and receiving butt rubs from his people.  If you mention 'belly rubs' he will turn upside down to give you full access to his sweet belly.
Here are some things necessary to understand about Preacher:
He doesn't like to be crated and doesn't need to be. He is uncomfortable around chaos and change.  Strangers concern him.  He worries about rain and thunder storms and needs a safe-place during them.  He doesn't like to be forced to do anything. He will do best with gentle, patient, adults who are very experienced with dog behavior, and who understand dogs that have emotional issues.  If you enjoy big, smart, couch potatoes like Preacher, and can commit to living with a dog that must be left alone at times, Preacher could be your dog.  He is a favorite of our shelter staff!
Call the shelter and speak to Sigrid to learn more about him.  Flower at

or ek.gk@verizon.net can tell you more about him too.
