VERY SMART!!! GOOD HOUSE MANNERS!
UPDATED:  NOV 17, 2018
Claude is a large dog, just over 60 lbs.   Hes an all-American Mutt, but probably has some Collie and Hound mixed in his heritage.  His markings are similar to traditional black and white Border Collies.  Claude has grey in his face, but its not from old age.  Hes around five years old with plenty of spunk and energy, but enough maturity to settle down and enjoy the comforts of indoor living.
Claude was found in early August as a stray. We dont know a lot about his background, but after spending several weeks in foster care we know more about him.  His behaviors lend themselves to his having spent a substantial amount of time on a chain.
Claude:
- wants very much to be social and be around people, but he has a hard time trusting them and can be defensive if he feels threatened.   He is particularly sensitive about his collar and does not like to be grabbed or guided by it.  When he came into the shelter, his old collar had a bolt in it that had rubbed into his neck. It was removed and replaced with a new collar, but Claude is still protective of his neck.
- jumps up wanting people to pay attention to him.   Even though he can be told over and over to stop, he will continue to do so.  This is a common behavior in dogs who have spent a lot of time on chains

their entire lives spent on their back legs looking for attention.
-  pulls hard on a leash. Again, a common behavior for chained dogs whove strained against the restrictions of their small existence.
- is surprisingly good with other dogs, big and small.  In his foster home there was a pushy, noisy, female German shepherd who is always yelling at him. Claude ignored her and removed himself from her vicinity, or appropriately corrected her if she pushed too far.  The smaller dogs barked at him, but he paid them no mind.
- loves toys and will entertain himself with big balls like Jolly Balls.
- was very interested in the cats in his foster home and barked at them.  He met them in very controlled circumstances.  He was not allowed to roam freely with the cats.  He has seen chickens through fencing and tried to chase them.  It is not uncommon for previously chained dogs to have strong prey drives, so a home without small animals such as cats or poultry is best.
- has good house manners and seems to be house trained.  All dogs need refreshers in new environments, so his new family will need to provide him that guidance.
- rides well in the car, but will grumble if you try to pick him up into a high vehicle.
- has met children and is very excited to see them.  Because Claude has trust issues he should not be adopted to a family with children, and should be kept safely under control when around them. His new family should not be lulled into thinking his excitement is happiness and it is appropriate for him to be around children.
- needs work on his recall skills.  Claude follows his nose (that hound heritage) and will wander away if given the chance.  He will need a fenced yard to keep him safely at home.
Claude is not a dog for beginner dog owners. He will require someone who is familiar with formerly chained dogs, and knows how to interpret his body language and stress signals.
A home visit and meet and greet will be required to adopt Claude.
GOOD WITH DOGS. NO CATS. NO POULTRY. NO CHILDREN.  NEEDS FENCED YARD.
